I made Wired!

October 31, 2008

Wired Magazine runs a bunch of photo contests, and their most recent one was of geeky Halloween costumes. I submitted a picture of myself, and people voted on it. I made the top ten, and consequently, made it onto the site. Woot!

The picture is me, but I didn’t take it – I found it off of Flickr, and I’ve used it as a profile picture. It was originally taken during the Montreal balloon festival troop. Here’s the rest that made the cut.

New England Garrison Mention on TOS

October 31, 2008

Brian Harnois was interviewed on the official Star Wars site, where this passage comes up:

Where did your nickname Darth Wheezy come from?

I got the nickname Wheezy from working on the show Ghost Hunters. But I am very much into the dark side on the Star Wars universe, and what better name to go by than Darth? I have been using that name on all the things I do now in the Star Wars realm. I am also a member of the New England Garrison and an honorary member of a few more garrisons around the country. I originally joined up way back in 2001 when I had a fully-detailed suit of Boba Fett armor. I don’t have that armor (unfortunately) anymore, but this is where the funny story comes into play. I was at DragonCon some years ago, and ran into a bunch of the 501st Legion. They said that they had a running bet that the Brian Harnois that is on the NEG roster was the same Brian Harnois that is on the show Ghost Hunters. Well, as you know, they won the bet, and I have become very good friends with a lot of the members of the 501st and have been to a few conventions and charity events with them. I hope someday soon to be able to get a Darth Vader suit or stormtrooper armor so I can get back to doing things with them as a member of the 501st and not just Ghost Hunters.

There’s still some touchup and minor things to be done, but, it’s done!

Mission Report: Church Street Halloween Parade & Festival

October 28, 2008

This was a quick event that Mike and I participated in on Saturday, the 25th. Church Street is one of the more popular locations in Burlington, and attracted a lot of people to this event. We arrived at the street and changed at Quarterstaff Games with a wrangler, Stuart, who was armed with my camera and made sure that we were safe and not falling apart.
From the moment that we stepped out the door, we were a hit and posed for hundreds of pictures.
One of the big events in the day was the ‘parade’ that we were asked to be part of. Unfortunately, it was fairly disorganized, and essentially a mass of people in costume marching up the street. Mike and I were seperated from each other and Stuart at several points throughout the march up the street. Once we reached the top of the street, we stood around and posed for pictures, gave high fives and things like that, before working out way down and desuiting. We were in armor for about two hours total, and had no major problems during the event.
While it was nice to have an additional event up here, hopefully we’ll have more of a role or organization in the future.

Review: The Clone Wars, 105: Rookies

October 28, 2008

The Clone Wars series has gotten far more impressive than I thought that it could be. This latest installment, Rookies, has proven to be one of my favorite episodes yet, and easily the best of the series.

In the preamble that precedes every episode, we’re informed that the war in ongoing, and that many clones are rushed to the battlefield. In this instance, a group of new clones are stationed on an outpost, where they are to protect an outpost at the edge of Republic territory. While there, a meteor shower brings in a group of commando droids, who take control of the base, killing the station’s commanding officer and forcing the four survivors to flee the base, while the droids make preparations for an invasion of Kamino. In a short scene, we see that Ventress has infiltrated the water world and is expecting the droid army.

At the same time, Commander Cody and Captain Rex are on the move, inspecting these outposts and come under fire when they attempt to enter it, and link up with the clone survivors. Once together, they retake the base, only to defend it as a Separatist fleet arrives and drops in reinforcements.

The clones, outnumbered and out gunned, rig the base to blow, and escape, save for one, who stays behind to hit the switch, destroying the base and alerting the Republic that the base is under attack. The republic swoops in and the four survivors are carried off to safety.

This episode worked well because it has almost all of the elements that have shown to be successful in the episodes, and that’s the Clones. They dominate the episode, at the expense of Jedi and the dim-witted battle droids. Along with this is dialog that is a bit better than some of the prior episodes.

What was also nice to see was a reintroduction of popular characters from the pilot movie that was released to theaters – Rex and Cody. In my mind, these two guys were the absolute highlights of the film, and I was wondering if and when they would be making a reappearance in the show. Like the film, the episode also brought in another element that worked, and that was the action that has been lacking a bit in a couple of these episodes.

The thing that really made me excited was one of the last lines in the episode: “You’re exactly the type of men I need in the Five-Hundred and First. ” This is the first time that the unit, named for the 501st Legion, has been spoken in a high-level canon feature. While the group was featured in Revenge of the Sith and in numerous books, it’s never been explicitly said, and it’s really cool to hear, and to see just how this group of fans has impacted the universe that helped create it.

This episode isn’t without flaws, however. Some of the main elements, such as the use of a passive signal to the Republic to let them know that everything is all clear is a bit simplistic and illogical, as is the lack of urgency to which the Republic officers and Jedi react to their soldiers falling out of contact. The droids make their own reappearances with irritating dialog, (although the commando droids are a bit more intelligent) which shows that there is work to be done on the series.

But, it is to be remembered that this series is aimed towards children, and not necessarily the generation that first saw the theatrical release thirty years ago. At the Woburn parade, I could see that there was still a lot of enthusiasm from the kids wearing the numerous clone trooper, Darth Vader, Commander Cody and Captain Rex costumes. This episode just helps remind me that I can enjoy this as well.

Mission Report: 2008 Woburn Parade

October 27, 2008

This marked my 30th event in a year – I’m very happy to have made it to this point, and yesterday, down in Woburn, I was thrilled to be part of the NEG with the Woburn Halloween Parade. This event is becoming our ‘big prop’ event, where we spend a ton of money, countless man-hours and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to come up with something really cool. Last year, we built a Jabba the Hutt Puppet. This year, we build a life-sized Dewback. It came down to the wire, but we got it done, and it looked fantastic.

I was up, as usual, really early for this, and picked up Mike, TK-2084, around 6, before sunrise. The ride down to Woburn, and most of the events, is usually 3+ hours, so this has become a regular thing, especially this past month. We made good time and got down to Woburn before anyone else, around 8:30. Keith, our Grievous was next, and slowly, people trickled in, greetings were exchanged and there was a lot of excitement for the arrival of our Dewback. When Dewie arrived, there was applause, and tinkering as we made last minute adjustments, installed the sound system and got him moving. By ten-thirty or so, a couple people were in armor, and despite the fact that we weren’t marching for a couple hours, I suited up and walked around. We didn’t break up into small groups and walk around too much like we did last year, but we did get another picture in front of a police civil disturbance truck that we found last time.

The parade came up quickly, and before we knew it, we  took group pictures and assembled in line and were on our way, where there was a lot of stopping and waiting before we hit the road. The response was fantastic. There were thousands and thousands of people (I’m guessing in the tens of thousands) lining the streets. Kids were in costume, and I noticed a lot of small Darth Vaders, Commander Codys and Captain Rexes, as well as a couple storm troopers and jedi lining the streets. I made sure to salute the Vaders, and there was a lot of slapping kid’s hands and posing for photographs along the way.

Dewie was a hit. We started off the parade right after him, and then moved ahead, where I could see people jumping up and pointing behind us. “Look at that!” “He’s riding a dinosaur!” “Wow!” were some of the things that I heard while walking in front of it, and with a patrol of sand troopers ahead of us, it must have looked absolutely incredible.

It was a good walk, about 3 or so miles, if I recall correctly. I was overheating by the end of it, but I made sure to drink a lot of water, and came out okay. At the end of the parade, we waited around for a free spot in a couple of pickup trucks, and ended up riding back, in armor, across town, to the amusement of a lot of people surrounding us on the streets. We had a worried moment when three police cars pulled up along side us, but that passed when they all saluted and drove on. We got back to the assembly point, desuited, got directions and went to the Burlington mall’s food court for dinner, which was a lot of fun. By six thirty or so, Mike and I headed out, ahead of about half the group, because of the drive, and got back around 9:30. I didn’t get home until around 10:30, because we spent an hour in the computer lab uploading pictures and contemplating large scale projects.

A fantastic troop. Had a blast, and I can’t wait for next year’s. I’m not sure if I’ll do another thirty troops this year, but It’ll be up there!
