Duarte Hosts 13th Annual Route 66 Parade
Garrett Gomez, the Nation’s Number One Jockey to Grand Marshal
Garrett Gomez, a nationally renowned top-earning jockey in the last two years, will lead Duarte’s 13th annual Salute to Route 66 Parade as Grand Marshal on Saturday, Sept. 20. The parade will step off at 9 a.m. at the northeast corner of Huntington Dr. and Cotter St. and proceed east along a one mile strip of Huntington Dr. in Duarte, a portion of historic U.S. Route 66.
Gomez won 76 stakes races in 2007, including two Breeders’ Cups events. With his $22.8 million in earnings and his stakes victory records, Gomez won the Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey in 2007. He also rode in 2008 Kentucky Derby.
Victor Valenzuela, lifelong Duarte resident and head trainer of the City of Duarte’s highly successful Duarte Youth Boxing Club, will be honored in the parade as Community Grand Marshal.
The theme of this year’s parade is “From Route 66 to the Stars” and will feature antique and classic cars, bands, equestrian units, floats, and marching groups. In addition to the many local schools, churches and community groups, the parade also attracts participants from throughout Southern California.
Parade Highlights to Include:
*Eight marching bands including Duarte High School, Diamond Ranch High School in Pomona, Montclair High School, Burroughs High School from Ridgecrest, South El Monte High School, San Dimas High School, Don Lugo High School from Chino and Rim of the World High School from Lake Arrowhead.
*501st Legion, Southern California Garrison composed of Stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters, as well as other Hollywood Superheroes will entertain both young and old alike.
*A memorial tribute to the late Duarte resident John McKiernan, a faithful member of the Route 66 Parade committee who died unexpectedly earlier this year. His family will be riding in the parade behind a riderless horse representing the loss of Big John as he was known in the community.
Immediately following the parade, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to enjoy music, food, and good times at the City Picnic and Route 66 Classic Car Show at Royal Oaks Park. An extra attraction this year will be a Crafts Fair featuring artisan and crafters from all over Southern California. Both Garrett Gomez and Victor Valenzuela will be available to meet and greet the public and sign autographs at the picnic.
Leading the list of community businesses helping to support this year’s parade are: Platinum Sponsors – Royal Oaks Manor, Foothill Transit, Cal-Am Water, StorAmerica, and Burrtec Waste Services. Mother Road Sponsors are: Jan’s Towing, Sierra Autocars and Charter Communications. Gold Sponsors are- Cabrera’s Mexican Restaurant, Joe’s Place, and City of Hope.
Opened in 1926, Route 66 was the first highway to connect Chicago to Los Angeles. It was nicknamed the Main Street of America because it passed through the heart of communities, including Duarte, for more than 2,000 miles from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. Route 66 was decommissioned in 1973 when the interstate highway was completed, but the love and lore of Route 66 lives on.
Previous Duarte Route 66 Parade Grand Marshals have included Larry Wilson, public editor of the Pasadena Star News, City of Hope CEO and President, Dr. Michael Friedman, TV personalities Stephanie Edwards, Stan Chambers and Michaela Pereira, Olympic gold medalists Sammy Lee and Rafer Johnson, Rose Parade float designer Raul Rodriguez, the late longtime Honorary Mayor of Hollywood, Johnny Grant, and Bobby Troup, composer of “Get your kicks on Route 66” popularized by the legendary Nat King Cole.
